Climate controlled storage sometimes referred to as temperature controlled storage is a type of storage unit that is specially designed to maintain steady temperatures and humidity levels.

Self storage is usually broken into two categories non climate controlled storage and climate controlled storage. If you are storing wine keep in mind that your bottles need to be kept under even more controlled conditions. But non climate controlled storage units are not heated or cooled which means your belongings will be subjected to fluctuating outdoor. While some outdoor or drive up storage locations may offer climate controlled units they are most commonly found in our one or multi story storage buildings.

And do you even need it. Typically the temperature will remain stagnant at between 55 degrees and 85 degrees fahrenheit. Paintings and fine art can shrink or expand in extreme temperatures. In humid environments mold or mildew can grow and ruin artwork.

So what is it. Generally most items in a non climate controlled storage unit will be protected. The ideal storage temperature for art is between 60 75 f with around 50 relative humidity. Climate controlled storage units are a feature mainly available at our indoor storage facilities.

At some storage facilities these units also offer other atmospheric controls including protection from humidity. Art climate controlled storage is best for artwork. This requires not only air conditioning but also a dehumidifier. While there doesn t seem to be an official standard for climate control in the storage industry it can be generally agreed on that a climate controlled storage unit should keep temperature levels between 55 and 78 f and humidity levels no higher than 55.
